An architectural plan is a detailed representation of a building or structure, typically created by an architect or designer. Plans include precise drawings, dimensions, and specifications that illustrate the layout, design, and construction details of the project. Plans will be required to be prepared by and stamped by an architect or engineers licensed in the State of Hawaii. On March 11, 2023 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) completed the inspection of 17 miles of sanitary sewer lines in Lahaina and cleared debris, such as sediment, rocks, rags, and grease from the lines. Once cleared, a robotic camera was used to assess conditions of the lines and identify any impacts from the fire. This video footage was shared with the County for review. The County is now working with their consultant to analyze the footage. Once the County receives this report, the Department of Environmental Management (DEM)

Wastewater Reclamation Division (WWRD) will utilize the findings to prioritize emergency repairs of damage caused by the August 2023 wildfires, including repairs needed to protect the wastewater treatment plant from excess infiltration of water through damaged sewer pipes. You will be allowed to start construction of your home even if sewer service is not restored. The County will strive to have your sewer service restored by the time your home construction is complete. If service is not restored by the time your home construction is complete, you may not be allowed to inhabit your home or will have to provide the County with plans outlining an alternate means of disposing of your wastewater (i.e. portable toilets) until sewer services are restored.

A temporary structure is a dwelling unit permitted for 180 days. Examples include but are not limited to RV, pre-fabricated living space for temporary habitation, trailers, modular homes, constructed or enclosed areas used for temporary habitation. To be considered for a temporary permit, dwelling units must meet Maui County Fire Code and must not pose a life safety or fire safety hazard. Units must be supported with certified individual wastewater systems or County sewer service to protect public health and sanitation.
